Westchester Fairfield Hebrew Academy’s eighth graders commemorated September 11th at the Greenwich UJA Federation’s 9/11 Memorial Garden.
The garden, which was built by Greenwich resident Andrew Nitkin as part of his Eagle Scout project, includes a steel beam from the World Trade Center site.
WFHA’s students helped beautify the garden and then led a traditional Jewish morning service, interspersed with their own writings about September 11, 2001. Although they were only kindergarteners at the time of the terrorists’ attacks, their writing poignantly depicted their emotions about the day. The service ended with the Mourner’s Kaddish, the traditional memorial prayer; the sounding the shofar, the ram’s horn which is blown at this time of year; and the singing of Lee Greenwood’s, “Proud to Be an American.”
